House Cleaning for an Alzheimer's Patient - April '15

Its 'RENOAID' in the works!

Leo Club of Singapore Metropolitan received a house cleaning service request from the Medical Social Work Associate from Changi General Hospital. Our Metro Leos helped the patient’s family to clean up the flat in order to make way for the HDB Home Improvement Programme (HIP) upgrading works. The room was much cluttered, our volunteers managed to clean up the flat within 4 hours. The elderly were happy with their fresh and clean home after the cleaning, and we also enjoyed chatting with them as we cleaned. We hope that the resident can live more comfortably after the change! Kudos to the Leos!!

CNY Shopping with Shine Kids - February '15

On this year valentine's/friendship day, we extended our love to 28 children by bringing them to shop for new year clothes, stationery and necessities to usher in the new year.

Thank you to all Metro Leos, Lions and volunteers for joining us in bringing joy to the children and guiding them on choosing the appropriate items within the allocated budget of $65 each!

Heartiest thanks to our sponsoring Lions Club, Lions Club of Singapore Metropolitan for the financial support in making this event possible. We would also like to thank all the kind souls who have donated to the children shopping fund! :)

Our very passionate Leo William says
"A very meaningful activity - helping and guiding the needy children from Shine Kids to shop for their clothings, shoes and even some small toys. Tiring but know that everything is worth it when I see the smile and satisfaction on the kids' faces. So happy that we are all there to make their days!"

Leo Youth Service Awareness Camp - November '14

The Leo Youth Service Awareness Camp took place for its second run this November. Organised by the Leo Club of Singapore Metropolitan in collaboration with Clementi Student Care Service, the LEOYSA camp was a 2 day camp aimed at empowering youths to take on leadership roles and partake in the planning and execution of their very own service learning projects.
Let's take a look at the exciting activities that were lined up for the youths!

Our very enthusiastic facilitators who volunteered their entire weekend for the camp, being there before everyone else, and leaving after everyone else.

Team bonding games #1 : Balloon Tower.
Youths enthusiastically unleashed their creativity to build the tallest balloon sculptures!  Some youths were indeed proud of their sculptures at the end!
Team bonding game #2: Secret Whispers!
What were they whispering about!?? haha
They were passing down a message in their lines!

With the help of their facilitators, youths came together for a very serious brainstorming and discussion of suitable service learning projects to embark on for the next day (day 2 of camp).

Out-on-the-field! Youths went out to the neighbourhood (Clementi area) to carrry out their projects!
It was a daunting experience for many youths as it was their first time interacting with so many strangers in public.  Many youths felt shy, embarrassed, tired, brave, out-going. Most importantly, they brought smiles to the faces of many people that day! :)

Aging simulation exercise where youths got to experience first-hand the difficulties that elderly might face when performing basic day-to-day activities.

This briefly sums up the very enriching 2 day LEOYSA camp! We hope that these youths will bring with them what they have learnt through this camp and inspire more people on service learning.
Thank you to all our volunteers, social workers and organisers for the effort put in. It was no easy feat executing this camp.

We would like to commend our two very capable organisers, Leo Jing Yi and Leo Zuda of this year's camp! Moreover, it is our newcomer, Leo Zuda's maiden project that he undertook. Good job! :)

Last but not least, we would like to thank Fusion Spoon for its constant support towards our community service projects! Thanks for the yummylicious lunch sponsored for the camp!

You can view more photos from the camp from our Leo Facebook album. And do consider joining the Leo Club of Singapore Metropolitan for future volunteer opportunities.  Follow our FB page for any updates: https://www.facebook.com/LeoSGMetro

Fundraising Flea Market - October '14

Leo club organised yet another flea market to raise funds for the club by selling clothes collected from members and friends.  The flea was held at Lucky Plaza with a team of 'dust' warriors who helped out at the booth.

'dust' warriors in action.  Too much clothes, a little stuffy in there...

The money raised from this year's flea will come in very handy to sponsor some of our volunteer projects and to help those in need.  Our heartfelt gratitude to Lions, friends and volunteers for coming down, donating high-quality items and for their moral support which has made this fundraising a success.

If you have clothes that are still in good condition but no longer fits you, do keep them safe in your wardrobe till our next collection for the next flea! Give those clothing a new lease of life:)

Sunday Lunch Project @ LB (Ghim Moh) cum Mid Autumn Celebration - August '14

On 31st August 2014, Leo volunteers served lunch at Lions Befrienders (Ghim Moh), played games with the residents and taught them some interesting art and craft revolving around the theme of mid-autumn festival!

art pieces of the residents - origami rabbits!

very active participation of the elders during riddles-guessing

proudly showcasing their masterpieces...

It was Leo Esther's first time being the emcee cum organiser for the entire event, so lets hear from her first-hand experience!

This is my first time organizing a mid autumn event for the elderly. It was a fun experience as you get to learn about their interests throughout the event. The most impactful activity was the activity on folding of origami rabbits as it was not easy for myself, all the more so for the elderly to follow suit! However they were very patient and enthusiastic to learn and follow us step by step. They deserved a clap! :D And I believe they have enjoyed the Sunday lunch as much as we, volunteers did. We hope to bring them more enjoyable activities in the future!:)
- Leo Esther Tan

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Leos and volunteers for helping out, our Lions for the kind sponsorship of lunch and prizes as well as Sweet Musings δΈ€η•η”œ for the kind sponsorship of 100 delicious mooncakes with many flavours for elder folks at Lions Befrienders and and SiLRA Home on both 30 and 31 August 2014! We sincerely appreciate your generosity!

Visit to Silra Home for Mid-Autumn Festival - August '14

On 30th August 2014, several of our Leos and volunteers made a visit to SILRA Home to bring the residents some festive joy in tune with the upcoming mid-autumn festival!
This trip was slightly different compared to our previous trips as you will see from the picture below!

Yes! We were dancing! Our very enthusiastic Leo Zuda and Leo Tih Yong very actively engaged all the residents in hands-on dancing! The easy-to-follow movements definitely hyped up the atmosphere for the residents, not forgetting a very healthy workout for them (and ourselves too).
We also played charades with them, which got all the residents putting on their thinking caps, trying to decipher our our acting.  We also distributed mooncakes, tausuan dessert and tau sar piah  - I traditional indulgence for the elderly, I suppose.

Albeit the short duration, I am certain all of us had fun and we will return soon to interact with the elderly again! Some of them do remember us from our regular visits :)

Our Leos and volunteer, Jansen!

NUSS Groceries with Love on Wheels (GLOW) 2014 - June '14

On 7th June 2014, a total of 18 Metro Leos and volunteers helped to deliver groceries bags to the needy households of Tampines GRC, one of the five GRCs that have benefited from this year NUSS Groceries with Love on Wheels (GLOW).

Started since 2010, Groceries on Wheels is an annual event organized by the NUSS with the aim of delivering basic necessities such as food and daily consumables to the needy residents. This year, in conjunction with its 60th anniversary, NUSS celebrated with its biggest community outreach to date. Besides reaching out to more households by collaborating with the People's Association this year, Groceries on Wheels was also renamed to GLOW to signify the 60th anniversary.

Our Leos and volunteers were among the 558 volunteers who helped with loading of the groceries bags onto buses and trucks, as well as the delivery of groceries bags to the needy residents in Tampines area. Besides delivering groceries bags to the residents, we also had the chance to interact and chat with them. It was a wonderful morning well-spent and we will definitely continue to support this worthy cause.
A big thank you to all Leos and volunteers who have sacrificed their Saturday morning sleep to volunteer with us! We look forward to volunteering with you all again!:)
